To celebrate volunteers week, we asked a few of our staff if they practice what they preach.
And they certainly do ?
Charlotte Falck Community Development and Internal Comms, Plas Menai
I am a volunteer crew member on the lifeboat in Pwllheli.
I have also taken on the role as Community Safety Officer in Pwllheli for the RNLI to promote water safety in the area.
I love being on hand to help anyone who needs our help on the water around Penllyn. Every crew member plays a vital role to helping people all around the cost.
Being water based we have a few RNLI volunteers at Plas Menai, Hope Filby , also doing the CSO (Community Safety Officer) role in Criccieth and Trigger a helm on the lifeboat in Beaumaris.
Gordon Clark Senior Officer, Cardiff
I'm a team manager for the Lisvane Panthers FC Under 10's Blacks. I'm responsible for the majority of the administrative duties including organising who's available for training, matches and tournaments as well as parent liaison. The club would not function without the help of its hundreds of volunteers with over 600 players and approximately 43 teams across the age groups playing on a weekend. We have a squad of 12 players of all abilities and one of the things we are most proud of is the development of all our players, but in one individual in particular who really struggled over the past 4 years and has blossomed this season. It is obvious that many teams even at U10 are selecting on ability but if we had done that then this individual could have been lost to football and or sport for life.
Sue Maughan Senior Officer, Cardiff
I officiate for athletics and cover a minimum of 20 meetings or days a year, indoors and outdoors, from local leagues through to UK and International events based in the UK. This year it will be over 40.
This summer I will be a Chief Field judge at both the IPC World Championships and the World Championships in London, being away for a total of just under 4 weeks across the two championships)
At a local level I love seeing young athletes putting their learning into action in competitions and achieving PBs whilst at the international level, the significance of your decision making can mean the difference between a Gold and Silver medal but being part of something such as the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games is something very special and Ive been honoured to play my part.
I think a photo was supplied last year of me officiating.
Carwyn Young Senior Officer, Cardiff
I run the Snack Shack at Pontrhydyfen Bowls Club, which simply means I supply soft drinks and sweets that players and spectators can buy. Not only does it generate some income for the club, it also adds to the experience of playing at our green.
Joy Bringer - Senior Sport Psychologist, Cardiff
I am a Director for Welsh Triathlon, responsible for Safeguarding and Equality. Most of my volunteering is in the evening and occasionally at weekends. I make a contribution to good governance and ensuring that our policies are up to date so that when concerns are raised, they are addressed swiftly and appropriately.
Luke Williams Project Support Officer, Cardiff
I am currently chairman and an UEFA B Licence football coach at Barry Town Utd Ladies FC. Having started coaching back in 2011 with an U10 Girls team, I then formed Vale Ladies & Girls Football Club in 2012 which subsequently merged with Welsh Premier League club Barry Town Utd in summer 2016.
Over the past four years the club has developed at a rapid pace and has become the largest female club in Wales with well over 200 players from age 6 to senior ladies. During the 2016/17 season we entered 14 female teams into the South Wales Womens & Girls League and the clubs progress on the pitch has been terrific with a total of 10 awards for the season with several players achieving international recognition.
I also co-ordinate lots of school based festivals, tournaments and coaching programmes to promote girls football in the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff areas and during the last 5 years the club has delivered over 300 schools based sessions with thousands of females engaging in the sport.
Initially I got involved in setting up a female club because I felt there was a significant gap in my local area for promoting girls football. Even in schools there was very little delivery taking place and we quickly learnt that generally girls felt more comfortable in a female only environment hence the girls only sessions we delivered. This then expanded into the Cardiff area where we also run teams under the Barry Town banner.
I thoroughly enjoy the volunteering I do for the club, both on the business side of things and of course delivering the coaching sessions. Enabling people, particularly young children to develop and achieve success is a major highlight of the role.
Simon Napper Head of Technology Solutions, Cardiff
I recently became involved with starting a new cycling club in Chepstow in a Club Secretary role. This involves organising committee meetings, club events and rides. I regularly lead Club Rides on a weekend and assist riders with tips on training and ride techniques. Our Club is for riders of all ages and abilities and one of our goals is to get more people riding regularly. We have nearly 100 members now which is not bad considering we only launched in Jan 2017! I find that volunteering work is very rewarding and enables me to meet new people and share my cycling experiences.
Rebecca Proctor - Events, Marketing and Business Development Officer, Cardiff
I currently volunteer my time to Team Viola, a fully funded senior synchronised skating team in Cardiff. I volunteer in a performance advisory role - working alongside the coach & team manager to ensure we have all the right elements in place to ensure the skaters can train and be their best individually and as a team. I cover sessions when the coach is unavailable and work on ice with some of the skaters that need to improve their basic skills. Skating is my passion and I love being on the ice, so spending my time to help develop a productive training environment and being able to see the skaters progress and enjoying the sport is worth all the hours I put in!
