National School Sport Week was once again a huge success across Wales. Thousands of youngsters took advantage of additional PE and exciting physical activity offers, while coming together as an army of supporters backing Team Wales ahead of the ever nearing Commonwealth Games. Just a month before the opening ceremony of Glasgow 2014, our schools took full advantage of linking this year's NSSW with Commonwealth inspired activities both on and off the sports field, while pupils put full effort into showing their support for our nations team.
Prestatyn High School, like many others, offered a full week of activities for its pupils. Providing increased sports activities throughout the period, the school's Commonwealth flagship event featured over 1200 pupils replicating the outline of Wales, a top opera singer leading the national anthem, a replica of the Queens Baton and a handful of past and present Team Wales squad members leading special sport and activity sessions.
We caught up with 5x60 Officers Jamie Turley, Michael Kitchin and John Ellis, who with a team of supporting YAs organised the Denbighshire schools events.

On June 26thas part of National School Sport Week, Prestatyn High School staff and pupils participated in a whole school celebration of sport, the Commonwealth Games and Team Wales. We wanted all of our pupils (and staff for that matter) to feel the buzz and get immersed within the Glasgow 2014 spirit, so decided to build on the Youth Sport Trust's NSSW principals and make our additional activities fully Commonwealth themed.
Commonwealth Games assemblies were delivered from stars of Team Wales such as previous gold medallist now turned weightlifting coach Ray Williams and Wales number one squash player Tesni Evans, whilst current weightlifting hopeful, Steph Owens put pupils through their paces in a Commonwealth Games fitness training camp.
Wanting to make the most of the day and offer an activity to suit every one of our pupils, we also organised additional activities, which ranged from a Cancer Research UK, Race for Life featuring the schools very own handcrafted wooden Commonwealth Baton, to lots of taster sessions led by local community clubs offering everything from kite surfing, lacrosse and dance to more traditional Commonwealth Sports such as Rugby Sevens, Squash and Netball. Pupils also had the opportunity to further their understanding of the Commonwealth Games and the Welsh language through educational pastoral sessions pledging support for Team Wales.
The day culminated in a closing ceremony celebration (which again, the whole school took part in). A rendition of the national anthem was performed with our pupils and staff positioned in the outline of Wales and led in song by local opera singer Sioned Terry. We were also treated to a top level table tennis performance provided by Team Wales twins Megan and Angharad Phillips, whilst the unveiling of the school baton relay message of inspiration for youngsters to take up sport and support Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games was read aloud by Head Teacher Mr Pierce.
The day was a huge success with both pupils and staff enjoying the activities, meeting the stars of the Welsh Commonwealth squad and coming together as a community supporting Team Wales. The Commonwealth Day was the showpiece event of yet another successful National School Sport Week at Prestatyn High School which included archery sessions, a primary transition Commonwealth festival and visit from Sky Sports mentor Neil Danns leading an inter-house skateboarding contest.

Impressive stuff from Prestatyn High School, which captures the level of activity that we saw on offer across Wales during NSSW. From hosting Olympians such as Darren Campbell, to a transition festival with over 100 primary school children taking part in activities including street dance, dodgeball, hockey and a climbing wall, we truly have been inspired!
