InfomationA Young Ambassadors View of Swansea 2014 allhere

Olivia Van-Den-Bogerd is a 16 year-old Young Ambassador from Glais, Swansea. As she gears up to volunteer with her fellow YAs at Swansea 2014, heres her take on being part of the event.

I have been a YA for 3 years. I have been a Silver and Gold Ambassador and have recently been appointed a member of the Welsh Steering Group and also a Platinum Ambassador.

I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to be able to volunteer at Swansea 2014, which will be held on our home track. We will be given the chance to meet and greet the athletes, direct spectators to their seats and help athletes in any way possible.

Becoming a Young Ambassador has really introduced me to being involved in events and opportunities which I didnt really realise were available. As well as being involved in encouraging young people to get involved in fitness and sport within their school environments or outside clubs, I have been so lucky to be part of very special events, including the Team Wales send off to Glasgow at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.

I first got involved with Swansea 2014 on 200 days to go when I was fortunate enough to be able to meet some of the athletes and give an interview to S4C on how important Swansea 2014 is and how much of an impact volunteering can have towards this great event.

I am most looking forward to speaking to the athletes and hearing their stories on how they got to where they are today. The picture is of myself and John, which was just a pinch of the amount of opportunities I have been able to have due to the YA programme. John is truly an inspirational man with a heart of gold. He has been paralysed since he was in his teens and has made sure he makes the most out of every opportunity he is given. Being able to meet someone like John has made me realise that being involved in promoting sport is so fulfilling.

I have recently completed my training for Swansea 2014 and I am thrilled to say that I will be attending the opening ceremony. I feel very honoured to be able to volunteer in such a special and historical event and am very grateful towards Sport Wales for giving us all this amazing opportunity.

This event is going to highlight the enjoyment of sport to all the young people, not only in our area but across Europe.  It follows an amazing Commonwealth Games and highlights the opportunities available in our areas for all young people to be involved in sport and activity in some way, whether just for fun or on a competitive level.  Many people will be inspired to start a sport activity, which maybe without these events they would not have had the confidence to give it a go.

Just a few days to go and every day my excitement is growing. The atmosphere there is going to be incredible and seeing all the different countries waving their flags will be truly breath-taking.  GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE COMPETING at Swansea 2014.
