My name is Conor Lees and I am currently studying Sport and Exercise Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University. During the summer term of 2015, I was in Crosskeys College completing my Level 3 BTEC Sports Diploma, as well as voluntarily helping a Student Management Team (SMT).
Part of my role within the SMT was trying to increase physical activity participation around the college, and not just within the sports department. During this time, the Further Education Survey came out, and I not only got the opportunity to complete it for myself, but also promote it to others around the college.
When completing the survey for myself, I thought about the wider implications this survey could mean for the younger generation. Such as them not being able to participate in an activity that I never had the opportunity to do. This, for the students of my time, was an opportunity to help decide what activities were available, make clear what they wanted available, what was enjoyed and what needed changing. This is the importance of this survey.
It was quick and easy to fill out, as the questions were easy to understand, and was as simple as ticking a box. It asked questions such as Do you participate in any physical activity? or What sports would you like to see within your area? No wrong answers, no trick questions, why wouldnt I take part? Just the perfect opportunity to present my thoughts and feelings about sport, physical activity and my own well-being.
As part of the SMT, we then went around the college promoting the survey. We explained to all students how spending 5-10 minutes of their time could have a significant impact in changing sports and physical activity for the better in years to come.
Now its your turn. This round of the FE Sport & Active Lifestyles Survey is just as important, if not more important, than when I completed it 3 years ago. You get to have your say, what you do now, what you want to do and what you think needs to change for the younger generation. From this research Sport Wales can understand what is working well within your community and college, and what can be changed. More opportunities can potentially arise for you and others, from just completing this questionnaire.
Thank You!
